The Goal Setting Process We Used to Get to $1M+ in Annual Revenue
By Pete Caputa for Databox
Naturally, January seems like the time to revisit our yearly marketing goals. Here at Pepperland Marketing, we keep a constant eye on our databoard in order to keep us aligned with our goals. Keeping up a cadence of regularly checking our data helps to keep us up to date on which of our efforts are working and which ones need some work.
“As we’ve rolled out functionality for tracking goal attainment, we’ve been surprised by how few companies follow a regularly-occurring goal-setting and planning cadence. Most companies seem to just set high-level annual financial goals and that’s it. Unfortunately, many of them also seem to be way off their targets.
They then go on to detail their four-step process:
- Benchmark performance quarterly
- Set goals monthly
- Revise plans weekly
- Monitor progress daily
Because the new year is the perfect time to begin planning for the year ahead, and because we think their framework is pretty good, we thought we’d share some of our key takeaways from their methodology.
Key Takeaways:
- Past performance should be reviewed quarterly; past performance doesn’t always repeat.
- Don’t set yourself up for disappointment. Pick realistic goals and slowly work toward them.
- If you aren’t checking your data regularly you can get caught off guard – Review plans weekly
- Keep an eye on your important KPI’s these will allow you to spot early trends.
