A Guide to Google Maps Marketing: What Local Businesses Need to Know

Chuck Price for Search Engine Journal

Google Maps is a great tool to use for local businesses who are trying to reach more people in their surrounding area. Google Maps acts as an extension of your website. You can add pictures, reviews, links, and more to attract people before they ever visit your website. Having an optimized business listing is key for anyone trying to rank higher in local search.

“Google handles about 3.5 billion searches per day and accounts for nearly 88% of all mobile searches. Local Google searches also directly translate into sales with 76% of those searching for local products visiting a store within the day.”

Setting up your business listing is quicker than you think and can have some immediate ROI. Head over to Google’s business page and claim your business. Once verified, you can start to build out your profile with descriptions and high-quality images. Before you know it, you’ll have more people calling, visiting and buying.

Key Takeaways:

  • Setting up an optimized Google Business listing should take less than 30 min.
  • Business listing help gather the information that could be scattered throughout your site. Users will have an easier time getting in touch with you once you have verified your company.

Shopify SEO: The Guide to Optimizing Shopify

Christopher Long for Moz Blog

According to builtwith.com the Shopify platform has become more popular than ever. Shopify is a platform that benefits companies who rely on ecommerce for the majority of their business. Their platform is unique and some of the same practices you apply to a WordPress site should vary. One of the most common issues is duplicate content. There are a lot of different reasons why so many duplicate content issues exist but the main reason why is because shopify automatically create multiple URLs for a single product. This ultimately helps with segmentation but can be a headache when trying to sort through a bunch of similar pages.

Key Takeaways:

  • When auditing your existing Shopify site, make sure you have proper canonical tags in place to let Google know which product pages should be given the most authority. (Shopify links to non-canonical pages by default)
  • You cannot alter the robots.txt of a Shopify site but you can add a noindex tag to a page by adding it to your theme.liquid file.
  • If you remove pages, products sell out, or have any other page changes make sure to utilize your redirect tool.

App of the Week: Descript

Descript is a great tool for podcasters who are looking for an easy way to edit audio. Most podcasters are using other sophisticated software that takes a bit of training to get comfortable with it. We have traditionally used Adobe Audition for our editing which, some may argue is one of the most advanced editing software on the market for podcasting. I really have to give it up for Descript, I was able to jump right in and start editing. The transcription feature makes it easy to follow along and find mistakes from your recording.
