No More Mixed Messages About HTTPS
Emily Stark and Carlos Joan Rafael Ibarra Lopez for Google Security Blog
The Google Security Blog announced they are starting to roll out a new security default for all pages to ensure no mixed content is loaded on the page. Not sure what mixed content is? Mixed content is when you are loading your HTML over a secure connection (HTTPS) but elements on the page (images, videos, scripts, etc.) are loaded from an insecure connection (HTTP).
Today we’re announcing that Chrome will gradually start ensuring that https:// pages can only load secure https:// subresources. In a series of steps outlined below, we’ll start blocking mixed content (insecure http:// subresources on https:// pages) by default.
So why is Google making this change? Mixed content issues pose a security risk to not only site owners but searchers who visit them. Hackers have a much easier time tampering with resources loaded over HTTP rather than HTTPS. Many website owners have made the switch from http://example.com to https://example.com but continue to load elements/resources over the insecure connection.
Key Takeaways
- Start to audit the elements you’re loading on each page and ensure each one is loaded from a secure HTTPS connection.
- Expect this to be fully rolled out by December of 2019
Video Enhancement Report For Google Search Console
Google Webmaster Blog
On Monday, Google announced two new tools that will make it easier for you to understand the performance of your videos. These tools will help you see how your videos perform in search and give you insights into how you can improve your video markup.
The Video Enhancement Report will show you errors, much like the coverage report, for issues related to markup. Once you have identified and resolved each issue, you can submit that video for validation. Google has also added these video performance metrics to the main search results tab making it easier to analyze your metrics.
Key Takeaways:
- Now you will be able to see and understand issues related to your video markup so you can make it easier for searchers and search engines alike to understand and learn from your videos.
- You will now be able to access video performance metrics from the main search results tab.
